Whilst watching the Leeds game in a bar in Orlando, who else but Alan Smith pulls up a chair beside me. I got talking to him all game and here's a few things that he told me:

* Leeds wanted him back on loan and Alex Ferguson wouldn't let him go.

* Leeds tried again when Smith was out of conention in the first team. Alan refused to come back because it was just after his injury and he didn't want to let the Leeds fans down by coming back and being useless for them.

* He missed the ferry to France from Portsmouth so he could stay behind in a bar and watch Carlisle -V- Leeds on thrusday. He was supposed to be going to France for his brothers stag-weekend.

* He and Milner would have been in with a shot of coming back to Leeds if they were in the Championship

* Milner wants to come back because he's gutted he only got about 30 games for us

* Rio and the rest of the former team, according to Alan, would still admit that the best time in their footballing career was being part of THAT Leeds team that got to the Champions League semi-final, even though Rio has now won everything with Man U.

* I witnessed him shout for Leeds throughout the game and he was just as gutted as anyone when we didn't win.

* He told me he had "too f*cking long" left on his contract at Newcastle. Since leaving Leeds he's seen football as more of a job than something he enjoys.


All in all he was a sound bloke and he seemed genuine in everything that he said. He managed to sway me at least and I can now say I would gladldy have him back. As I left I said to him "hope to see you at Elland Road soon mate" and he replied "we'll (Leeds) shit this league by about 10 points next season and then I might have a shot at coming back".
